Orphans in Ukraine Find Support in JDC's New "Talents Workshop" Program

The Ukrainian Media Agency, "UNIAN", was filled with a mix of high power Cabinet Ministers, leaders of local social service agencies, representatives from UNICEF and USAID, as well as top print and television journalists recently. They gathered to attend the press conference announcing the launch of "Talents Workshop" — JDC's new non-sectarian program.

Specifics of the project were enthusiastically presented by the Beitenu Center for Jewish Children and Families, JDC's Kiev Institute for Social and Community Workers, JDC Kiev Office, Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Ukraine, and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. They explained to the audience that the new JDC "Talents Workshop" initiative will provide art-therapy classes to orphaned children living in 10 Ukrainian public boarding schools. The goal of the program is two-fold: to give orphaned children the opportunity to explore their talents and potential through art expression and to provide assistance in pedagogical methodologies related to art to professionals in state and public structures. The program aims to foster the talents of children who are deprived of parental care, support and encouragement.

A State official said that she and her colleagues were lending their full support and cooperation to the "Talents Workshop" project because "the sponsor of the project is JDC, an organization that has gained respect in Ukraine during the years of its operations."

One of the many goals of JDC's non-sectarian program is to build bridges between Jewish and non-Jewish communities. In the case of "Talents Workshops," one only has to look at the partners JDC is working with, they include: the Kiev City Council, Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, and Ministry of Labor and Social Protection. All of these entities ensure the project will be a great success.
